THE SEASON OF CREATION 2025

The Season of Creation reflects the commitment of our Church to responding appropriately to the global environmental and climate crisis, which has drawn attention to what has perhaps become a neglected aspect of our faith: that God created the world, that it is good, and that we, as human beings created in God’s image, have a particular responsibility for the care of God’s creation. It is right that this be reflected in our worship.

The Season of Creation will run from the first Sunday of September for four weeks

WEEK I

1st Sunday 7th September.

Luke 14.25-33

Large crowds were travelling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.” Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.’

Thinking about this:

‘None of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions’.

“You cannot be serious Jesus!”

Or can he? We are challenged to take stock and think about the people and things that are dear to us and the impact of our actions. Remember “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Do we hold creation dear?

Does our faith lay a responsibility to consider the environmental impact of our purchases and possessions?

Yes, this is from the US but the story is universal!

EAGLE POEM by Joy Harjo [first nation American]

To pray you open your whole self
To sky, to earth, to sun, to moon
To one whole voice that is you.
And know there is more
That you can’t see, can’t hear;
Can’t know except in moments
Steadily growing, and in languages
That aren’t always sound but other
Circles of motion.
Like eagle that Sunday morning
Over salt River. Circled in blue sky
In wind, swept our hearts clean
With sacred wings.
We see you, see ourselves and know
That we must take the utmost care
And kindness in all things.
Breathe in, knowing we are made of
All this, and breathe, knowing
We are truly blessed because we
Were born, and die soon within a
True circle of motion,
like eagle rounding out the morning
Inside us.
We pray that it will be done
In beauty. In beauty.
